Xavier Corberó (1935–2017) is one of the most outstanding Spanish artists of the last century. His sculptures in rough stone, marble, and bronze shaped ideas that run through a circle of contemporary surrealist artists, including Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, and Joan Miró, but with pieces clearly his own. His works are widely and internationally celebrated in institutions such as the V&A in London and the Met in New York, but perhaps his greatest work of art is to be found outside Barcelona in the form of the house he built for himself over a period of time. A span of five decades, a labyrinthine series of rooms, levels, buildings, and arches that he continually added whenever money came his way, hatching new plans on morning walks with the local builder.
La Casa de Xavier Corberó, edited by his daughter Ana Corberó, is the first publication to explore this house in Esplugues de Llobregat, which will soon be sold. With original photography by Daniel Riera, it also includes a series of texts by old friends and colleagues of the artist: architects Ricardo Bofill and Josep Acebillo, program director of the World Architecture Festival Paul Finch, artist and journalist Celia Lyttelton, director of RBTA Pablo Bofill, as well as an interview with Corberó himself conducted by the filmmaker Albert Moya, originally published in number 16 of the magazine Apartamento.
